     Elizabeth Shovell was born on 2 November 1692. She was the daughter of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovel and Elizabeth Hill.^1,2 She married, firstly, Robert Marsham, 1st Baron of Romney, son of Sir Robert Marsham, 4th Bt. and Margaret Bosville, on 19 August 1708.³ She married, secondly, John Carmichael, 3rd Earl of Hyndford, son of Brig.-Gen. James Carmichael, 2nd Earl of Hyndford and Lady Elizabeth Maitland, in September 1732.³ She died on 17 November 1750 at age 58.⁴
     From 19 August 1708, her married name became Marsham. After her marriage, Elizabeth Shovell was styled as Baroness of Romney on 22 June 1716. From September 1732, her married name became Carmichael.³ After her marriage, Elizabeth Shovell was styled as Countess of Hyndford on 16 August 1737.

     Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovel was born in 1650. He married Elizabeth Hill.² He died in 1707.
     He was appointed Knight.³ He lived at May Place, Crayford, Kent, England^G.¹ He was also known as Cloudesley Shovell.⁴ He gained the rank of Admiral in the Royal Navy.³

     John Carmichael, 3rd Earl of Hyndford was born on 15 March 1700/1.¹ He was baptised on 15 March 1701 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.³ He was the son of Brig.-Gen. James Carmichael, 2nd Earl of Hyndford and Lady Elizabeth Maitland.¹ He married, firstly, Elizabeth Shovell, daughter of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovel and Elizabeth Hill, in September 1732.¹ He married, secondly, Jean Vigor, daughter of Benjamin Vigor, on 22 December 1756.¹ He died on 19 July 1767 at age 66, without surviving male issue.¹
     He gained the rank of Captain in 1733 in the 3rd Foot Guards.¹ He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Inglisberry and Nemphlar [S., 1701] on 16 August 1737.¹ He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Hyndford [S., 1701] on 16 August 1737.¹ He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Carmichael, of Westraw and Hyndford, co. Lanark [N.S., 1627] on 16 August 1737.⁴ He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Carmichael of Carmichael [S., 1701] on 16 August 1737.¹ He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1738 and 1761.¹ He held the office of High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1739 to 1740.¹ He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lanarkshire on 9 April 1739.¹ He held the office of Ambassador to Prussia in 1742.¹ He was appointed Knight in 1742.¹ He held the office of Ambassador to Russia between 1744 and 1750.¹ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1750.¹ He held the office of Ambassador to Austria between 1752 and 1764.¹ He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.⁵
     

     William de Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor was born on 26 February 1725.² He was the son of Jacob des Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone and Mary Clarke.³ He married, firstly, Harriet Pleydell, daughter of Sir Mark Stuart Pleydell, 1st and last Bt. and Mary Stuart, on 18 January 1747/48.² He married, secondly, Rebecca Alleyne, daughter of John Alleyne and Mary Terrill, on 5 September 1751.² He married, thirdly, Anne Hales, daughter of Sir Thomas Hales, 3rd Bt. and Mary Marsham, on 22 July 1765.³ He died on 28 January 1776 at age 50.² He was buried at Britford, Wiltshire, England.⁴
     He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.² He was educated at University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.² He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Salisbury between 1747 and 1761.⁴ He held the office of Recorder of Salisbury in 1761.⁴ He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Longford, Baron of Longford, co. Wilts [G.B., 1747] on 17 February 1761.² He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Folkestone, of Folkestone, co. Kent [G.B., 1747] on 17 February 1761.² He succeeded as the 4th Baronet des Bouverie, of St. Catherine Cree Church, London [G.B., 1714] on 17 February 1761.² He was created 1st Earl of the county of Radnor [Great Britain] on 31 October 1765, with special remainder to the male descendants of his father.² He was created 1st Baron Pleydell-Bouverie of Coleshill, co. Berks [Great Britain] on 31 October 1765.² He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1767.⁴ He was Governor of the Levant Company between 1771 and 1776.² He was Governor of the Hospital Protestants.²

     Harriet Pleydell was the daughter of Sir Mark Stuart Pleydell, 1st and last Bt. and Mary Stuart.² She married William de Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor, son of Jacob des Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone and Mary Clarke, on 18 January 1747/48.¹ She died on 29 May 1750.² She was buried at Britford, Wiltshire, England.²
     From 18 January 1747/48, her married name became de Bouverie.

     Sir Mark Stuart Pleydell, 1st and last Bt. married Mary Stuart, daughter of Robert Stuart.²
     He left his estates in tail to his grandson, 2nd Earl of Radnor, so long as each heir should add the name Pleydell.¹ He gained the title of 1st Baronet Pleydell, of Coleshill, Berkshire.

     Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie, 2nd Earl of Radnor was born on 4 March 1750.² He was the son of William de Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor and Harriet Pleydell.² He married Hon. Anne Duncombe, daughter of Anthony Duncombe, 1st and last Lord Feversham, Baron of Downton and Anne Hales, on 24 January 1777.³ He died on 27 January 1828 at age 77.²
     He was given the name of Jacob Bouverie at birth.² He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, England.² He was educated at University College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.² He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Salisbury between 1771 and 1776.² He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of the county of Radnor [G.B., 1765] on 28 January 1776.² He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Pleydell-Bouverie of Coleshill, co. Berks [G.B., 1765] on 28 January 1776.² He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Folkestone, of Folkestone, co. Kent [G.B., 1747] on 28 January 1776.² He succeeded as the 5th Baronet des Bouverie, of St. Catherine Cree Church, London [G.B., 1714] on 28 January 1776.² He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Longford, Baron of Longford, co. Wilts [G.B., 1747] on 28 January 1776.² He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) in 1779.² He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Berkshire between 1791 and 1819.²

     Rebecca Alleyne was born on 11 October 1725.² She was the daughter of John Alleyne and Mary Terrill.¹ She married William de Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor, son of Jacob des Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone and Mary Clarke, on 5 September 1751.³ She died on 4 May 1764 at age 38.³ She was buried at Britford, Wiltshire, England.²
     Her married name became de Bouverie. After her marriage, Rebecca Alleyne was styled as Viscountess Folkestone on 17 February 1761.

     John Alleyne was the son of Reynold Alleyne and Elizabeth Gay.¹ He married Mary Terrill, daughter of William Terrill and Rebecca Spire, on 23 November 1718.² He died in 1730 at Bath, Somerset, England^G.¹
     He was a barrister.¹ He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G.² He lived at Four Hills, Barbados^G.¹

     Anne Hales was born on 24 June 1736.² She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Hales, 3rd Bt. and Mary Marsham.¹ She married, firstly, Anthony Duncombe, 1st and last Lord Feversham, Baron of Downton, son of Anthony Duncombe and Jane Cornwallis, on 10 July 1758.¹ She married, secondly, William de Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor, son of Jacob des Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone and Mary Clarke, on 22 July 1765.¹ She died on 18 June 1795 at age 58.¹ She was buried at Britford, Wiltshire, England.²
     From 10 July 1758, her married name became Duncombe. From 22 July 1765, her married name became de Bouverie. After her marriage, Anne Hales was styled as Viscountess Folkestone on 22 July 1765. After her marriage, Anne Hales was styled as Countess of Radnor on 13 October 1765.
