John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland was born on 1 June 1759.1 He was the son of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland and Augusta Bertie.1 He married, firstly, Sarah Anne Child, daughter of Robert Child, on 20 May 1782 at Gretna Green, Dumfries-shire, ScotlandG, against the wishes of her father.1 He married, secondly, Jane Huck-Saunders, daughter of Richard Huck-Saunders and Jane Kinsey, on 24 March 1800.1 He died on 15 December 1841 at age 82.1
He succeeded as the 10th Earl of Westmorland [E., 1624] on 25 April 1774.3 He succeeded as the 10th Baron Burghersh, co. Sussex [E., 1624] on 25 April 1774.3 He held the office of Joint Postmaster-General in 1789.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1789.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland between 1789 and 1795.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1793.1 He held the office of Master of teh Horse between 1795 and 1798.1 He held the office of Lord of the Privy Seal between 1798 and 1806.1 He held the office of Lord of the Privy Seal between 1807 and 1827.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire between 1828 and 1841.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
