Sir James Montgomery, 1st Bt.1

     Sir James Montgomery, 1st Bt. was the son of William Montgomery of Magbiehill and Barbara Rutherford.1 He married Margaret Scott, daughter of Robert Scott.1 He died on 2 April 1803.2
     He held the office of Lord Advocate of Scotland in 1766.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Peebles in 1768.1 He held the office of Chief Baron of the Exchequer [Scotland] between 1775 and 1781.1 He was created 1st Baronet Montgomery, of Stanhope, co. Peebles [U.K.] on 16 July 1801.1
