He was commissioned circa 1852 with the rank of Cadet, in the service of the Royal Navy.3 He fought in the Crimean War in 1855.3 He held the office of Mayor of Blackburn between 1876 and 1879.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Blackburn between 1886 and 1910.3 He was created 1st Baronet Hornby, of Brookhouse, Blackburn, co.
