He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He gained the rank of Major in the Welsh Guards.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He was awarded the Knight of Magistral Grace, Sovereign Military Order of Malta in 1955.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the City and Garrison of Gibraltar in 1964.1 He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Makins, of Rotherfield Court, co. Oxford [U.K., 1903] on 22 April 1969.1 On his death, his title became extinct.1

Samuel Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Baron Masham of Swinton1 
Samuel Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Baron Masham of Swinton was born on 1 January 1815.1 He was the son of Ellis Cunliffe-Lister-Kay and Mary Kay.1 He married Anne Dearden, daughter of John Dearden, on 6 September 1854.1 He died on 2 February 1906 at age 91.1
In 1882 he bought the Swinton estates from George Danby Affleck.1 He purchased estae of Mashamshire, for £400,000 in 1882 from George Danby.3 He held the office of High Sheriff of the North Riding, Yorkshire in 1887.1 He was created 1st Baron Masham of Swinton, co. York [U.K.] on 15 July 1891.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the West Riding Rifle Volunteers.4 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the West and North Riding, Yorkshire.4 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for the West and North Riding, Yorkshire.4 He invented the mechanical woolcomb, a silk comb using silk waste and a velvet loom.1
