August Wilhelm Herzog von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel was born on 8 March 1662. He was the son of Anton Ulric Herzog von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and Elisabeth Juliana von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg in Norburg.1 He married, firstly, Christine Sophie von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, daughter of Rudolf August Herzog von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and Christiana Elisabeth von Barby-Muhlingen, on 29 July 1681. He married, secondly, Sophie Amalia von Holstein-Gottorp, daughter of Christian Albrecht Herzog von Holstein-Gottorp and Frederica Amalie Oldenburg, Princess of Denmark, on 7 July 1695. He married, thirdly, Elisabeth Sophie Marie von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg in Norburg, daughter of Rudolph Friedrich Herzog von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg in Norburg and Bibiana von Promnitz in Pless, on 12 September 1710. He died on 23 March 1731 at age 69.
He was a member of the House of Guelph.1 He succeeded as the Herzog von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in 1714.1
