He was commissioned in 1767, in the service of the British Army.3 He succeeded as the 7th Lord Lindsay of Balcarres [S., 1633] on 20 February 1768.1 He succeeded as the 6th Earl of Balcarres [S., 1651] on 20 February 1768.1 He succeeded as the 6th Lord Lindsay and Balneil [S., 1651] on 20 February 1768.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1777 in the 24th Foot.3 He fought in the Battle of Ticonderoga on 7 July 1777, where he was wounded.3 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1784 and 1796.2 He was Colonel of the 63rd Foot between 1789 and 1825.3 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1793.3 He was Commander of the forces in Jersey in 1793.3 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Jamaica between 1794 and 1801.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1798.3 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1802 and 1825.2 He gained the rank of General in 1803.3 He succeeded as the 23rd Earl of Crawford [S., 1398] on 30 January 1808, de jure, as the succession of the title was not confirmed by the House of Lords until after his death, in 1848.1

(Tory) for Wigan between 1820 and 1825.1 He succeeded as the 24th Earl of Crawford [S., 1398] on 27 March 1825.1 He succeeded as the 7th Lord Lindsay and Balneil [S., 1651] on 27 March 1825.2 He succeeded as the 7th Earl of Balcarres [S., 1651] on 27 March 1825.1 He succeeded as the 8th Lord Lindsay of Balcarres [S., 1633] on 27 March 1825.2 He was created 1st Baron Wigan of Haigh Hall, co. Lancaster [U.K.] on 5 July 1826.1 In 1853 he unsuccessfully claimed the Dukedom of Montrose.2
