He was a practising Advocate in 1691.2 He purchased Cullen, Buchan in 1698.2 He was created 1st Baronet Grant, of Monymusk and Cullen, Buchan [Nova Scotia] on 7 December 1705, with special remainder to heirs male whatsoever.2 He was styled as Lord Cullen [Scottish Law Lord] in 1709.2 He held the office of a Lord of Session in 1709.2 He purchased Monymusk in 1713 from Sir William Forbes of Monymusk, 4th Bt.2
