He was commissioned in 1854, in the service of the Royal Navy.2 He fought in the Crimean War.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1860.2 He gained the rank of Gunnery Lieutenant in 1862.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Montgomery between 1863 and 1877.2 He was a practising barrister in 1866.2 He succeeded as the 4th Baron Sudeley of Toddington, co. Gloucester [U.K., 1838] on 28 April 1877.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Montgomeyshire.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Montgomeryshire.2 He was Chairman of the British Commission to Vienna Electrical Exhibition in 1883.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1886.2 He held the office of Captain of the Gentlemen-at-Arms in 1886.2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1888.2 He was director of P&O Steamship Company and Sir William Armstrong & Company.2
