John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale1 
He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Lowther, of Lowther, co. Westmorland [N.S., 1638] on 30 November 1675.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in February 1688/89.1 He was created 1st Viscount Lonsdale, co. Westmorland [England] on 28 May 1696.1 He was created 1st Baron Lowther of Lowther, co. Westmorland [England] on 28 May 1696.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.2

He was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Carlisle between 1694 and 1702.1 He was admitted to Middle Temple entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cumberland between 1708 and 1722.1 He held the office of Bencher of Middle Temple.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Appleby between 1723 and 1727.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cumberland between 1727 and 1755.1 He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Lowther, of Whitehaven [E., 1642] on 2 October 1731.1 He held the office of Vice-Admiral of Cumberland.1 On his death his baronetcy became extinct.1

He was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1690 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Lowther, of Whitehaven [E., 1642] circa January 1705/6.1 He was disinherited by his father.1

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Pontefract between 1701 and 1710.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Pontefract between 1715 and 1729.1 He was created 1st Baronet Lowther [Great Britain] on 6 January 1714/15.1 He also had two daughters who died unmarried.1
