     Ranald Macdonald, 4th of Belfinlay was the son of Angus Macdonald, 2nd of Belfinlay and Penelope Macneil.2 He died on 27 September 1749 at Inverness, Inverness-shire, Scotland, in prison, unmarried.1
     He fought in the Battle of Culloden in 1746, where he was severely wounded, and was captured.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1746 in the Clanranald’s Regiment.1
