Daniel O’Connell was born on 6 August 1775.3 He was the son of Morgan O’Connell and Catherine O’Mullane.4 He married Mary O’Connell, daughter of Thomas O’Connell and Ellen Tuohy, on 23 June 1802.3 He was also reported to have been married on 24 July 1802.5 He died on 15 May 1847 at age 71 at Genoa, ItalyG.5
Daniel O’Connell also went by the nick-name of ‘The Liberator’.3 He was educated at English College, St. Omer, FranceG.3 He was educated at English College, Douai, FranceG.3 He was admitted to Gray’s Inn.3 He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn.3 He was admitted to Irish Bar in 1798 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.3 He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.)3 In 1805 he signed a petition for Catholic emancipation.5 He was chairman of a sub-committee for reporting on laws affecting Catholics in 1811.5 He fought strenuously for Catholic emancipation.5 In 1826 he founded the ‘Order of Liberators.5‘ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Clare in 1828, but refused to take oath of supremacy and was debarred from taking his seat.3,5 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Clare between 1829 and 1830.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Waterford between 1830 and 1836.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dublin in 1832.5 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Dublin in 1836, and was unseated on a petition.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Kilkenny in 1838.3 He held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1841.5 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Cork in 1841.3 In 1844 he was arrested and charged with creating discontent and disaffection and sentenced to a fine of £2,000 and one year’s imprisonment, but had the judgment reversed on appeal.5 He lived at Derrynane Abbey, Caherdaniel, County Kerry, IrelandG.1 He was responsible more than any other for the creation of national feeling in Ireland.5
