Robert Arthur Sanders, 1st and last Baron Bayford was born on 20 June 1867 at London, EnglandG.1 He was the son of Arthur Sanders and Isabella Synge.1 He was baptised at St. Luke’s, Chelsea, London, EnglandG.1 He married Lucy Sophia Halliday, daughter of William Halliday Halliday and Maria Farquhar, on 3 August 1893.1 He died on 24 February 1940 at age 72, without surviving male issue.3
He was educated between 1881 and 1886 at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.1 He was educated between 1886 and 1890 at Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1891 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He was Master of the Devon and Somerset Staghounds between 1895 and 1907.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Unionist) for Bridgwater between 1910 and 1923.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 13 May 1911 in the Royal North Devon Yeomanry.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918, in Egypt and Palestine, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the Gallipoli Campaign. He held the office of Treasurer of H.M. Household between 1918 and 1919.1 He held the office of Junior Lord of the Treasury between 1919 and 1921.1 He was created 1st Baronet Sanders [U.K.] on 28 January 1920.1 He held the office of Vice-President of the Army Council between 1921 and 1922.1 He held the office of Under-Secretary of State for War between 1921 and 1922.1 He held the office of Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries between 1922 and 1924.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 25 October 1922.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Unionist) for Somerset, Wells Division between 1924 and 1929.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in 1928 in the 96th (Royal Devon Yeomanry) Field Brigade, Royal Artillery (Territorial Army.)1 He was created 1st Baron Bayford, of Stoke Trister, co. Somerset [U.K.] on 18 June 1929.1 He held the office of Chairman of the Somerset County Council.1
On his death, the Barony of Bayford became extinct.3
