Edward John Stanley, 18th Earl of Derby was born on 21 April 1918.1 He was the son of Rt. Hon. Sir Edward Montagu Cavendish Stanley, Lord Stanley and Hon. Sibyl Louise Beatrix Cadogan.1 He married Lady Isabel Milles-Lade, daughter of Hon. Henry Augustus Milles-Lade and Esther Benyon, on 22 July 1948.1 He died on 28 November 1994 at age 76, without issue.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Stanley of Preston, co. Lancaster [U.K., 1886] in 1936.1 He succeeded as the 12th Baronet Stanley, of Bickerstaffe, co. Lancs [E., 1627] in 1936.1 He succeeded as the 5th Baron Stanley of Bickerstaffe, co. Lancaster [U.K., 1832] in 1936.1 He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Grenadier Guards.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1944.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lancashire between 1946 and 1951.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1947 in the King’s Regiment, Territorial Army.1 He was Colonel of the 5th/8th (Volunteer) Battalion, King’s Regiment between 1947 and 1951.1 He succeeded as the 18th Earl of Derby [E., 1485] on 4 February 1948.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Lancaster University, Lancaster, Lancashire, EnglandG, in 1949.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Liverpool College, Liverpool, Lancashire, EnglandG, in 1949.1 He was Colonel of the 4th (Volunteer) Battalion, Queen’s Lancashire Regiment (TAVR) between 1951 and 1967.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1951 and 1968.1 He was Colonel of the 1st Battalion, Liverpool Scottish, Territorial Army in 1964.1 He held the office of Pro-Chancellor of Lancaster University between 1964 and 1971.1 He was Colonel of the 1st and 2nd Battalion, Lancastrian Volunteers, Territorial Army between 1967 and 1975.1 He was a director of Martins Bank.1 He held the office of Constable of Lancaster Castle between 1972 and 1994.1 He was appointed Commander, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (C.St.J.)1
