     Francis Napier, 8th Lord Napier of Merchistoun was born on 23 February 1758 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.^1,2 He was the son of William Napier, 7th Lord Napier of Merchistoun and Marie Anne Cathcart.¹ He married Maria Margaret Clavering, daughter of Lt.-Gen. Sir John Clavering, on 13 April 1784.¹ He died on 1 August 1823 at age 65.¹
     He succeeded as the 8th Lord Napier of Merchistoun [S., 1627] in 1775.³ He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Scott, of Thirlestane [N.S., 1666] in 1775.¹ He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1796 and 1806.¹ He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant and Sheriff Principal of Selkirkshire.¹ He was 1st Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly Church of Scotland between 1802 and 1816.¹ He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1807 and 1823.¹ He graduated with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)¹

     Mary Ann Taylor was the daughter of Aaron Taylor.¹ She married Admiral Lord Edward Russell, son of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford and Lady Georgiana Gordon, on 8 February 1860.¹ She died on 16 October 1874.¹
     Her married name became Russell.

     Louisa Crommelin Roberta Jowitt Whitwell was the daughter of Robert Jowitt Whitwell.¹ She married Hastings William Sackville Russell, 12th Duke of Bedford, son of Herbrand Arthur Russell, 11th Duke of Bedford and Mary du Caurroy Tribe, on 21 November 1914.¹ She died on 2 October 1960.¹
     Her married name became Russell. After her marriage, Louisa Crommelin Roberta Jowitt Whitwell was styled as Duchess of Bedford on 27 August 1940.
