Meath [Ireland] on 3 October 1760.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Huntingdonshire between 1768 and 1796.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1782.1 He held the office of Comptroller of the Household between 1782 and 1784.1

He was commissioned in 1778 with the rank of officer.1 He fought in the American War of Independence.1 He was Equerry to HRH The Prince of Wales between 1784 and 1795.1 He fought in the Battle of Roubaix on 17 May 1794, where he lost his left arm.1 He held the office of Deputy Governor of Berwick between 1795 and 1842.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1798.1 He fought in the Battle of Aboukir in 1801.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in 1804.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1805.1 He fought in the North German Expedition in 1805.1 He fought in the Copenhagen Expedition in 1807.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl Ludlow [I., 1760] on 7 November 1811.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Preston of Ardsallagh, co. Meath [I., 1760] on 7 November 1811.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Ludlow of Ardsallagh, of Ardsallagh and Great Stoughton, co. Huntingdon [I., 1755] on 7 November 1811.1 He gained the rank of General in 1814.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1815.1 On his death, all of his titles became extinct, and his estates passedto Lord John Russell.1
