He was given the name of Thomas Lumley at birth.1 He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He was Clerk to the Council of the Duchy of Lancaster between 1716 and 1731.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1717 in the Lord Hinchinbroke Regiment of Foot.1 He held the office of Envoy Extraordinary to Lisbon between 1722 and 1724.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Arundel between 1722 and 1727.1 In 1723 his name was legally changed to Thomas Lumley-Saunderson by Act of Parliament, on inheriting the estates of his cousin, James Saunderson, Earl of Castleton.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in 1725.1 He held the office of Equerry to King George II between 1727 and 1730.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Lincolnshire between 1727 and 1740.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Lumley, of Lumley Castle [E., 1681] on 29 January 1739/40.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Lumley [E., 1689] on 29 January 1739/40.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Scarbrough [E., 1690] on 29 January 1739/40.1 He succeeded as the 4th Viscount Lumley of Waterford [I., 1628] on 29 January 1739/40.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1745 in the Ancaster’s Regiment of Foot.1
