Godfrey Rathbone Benson, 1st Baron Charnwood was born on 6 November 1864 at Langtons, Alresford, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He was baptised at Alresford Parish Church, Alresford, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He was the son of William Benson and Elizabeth Soulsby Smith.1 He married Dorothea Mary Roby Thorpe, daughter of Roby Thorpe and Nelly Mundella, on 11 May 1897 at St. Margaret’s Church, Westminster, London, EnglandG.1 He died on 3 February 1945 at age 80.3
He was educated between 1877 and 1883 at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.1 He was educated between 1883 and 1887 at Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Oxfordshire, Woodstock Division between 1892 and 1895.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Staffordshire.4 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Staffordshire.4 He held the office of Mayor of Lichfield between 1909 and 1911.1 He was created 1st Baron Charnwood, of Castle Donington, co.
