Frederick Herbert Maugham, 1st Viscount Maugham was born on 20 October 1866 at Paris, FranceG.1 He was the son of Robert Ormond Maugham and Edith Mary Snell.1 He was baptised in November 1866 at Paris, FranceG.1 He married Helen Mary Romer, daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Romer and Betty Lemon, on 19 December 1896 at Kensington, London, EnglandG.1,3 He died on 23 March 1958 at age 91.4
He was educated at Dover College, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn in 1890 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He was appointed King’s Counsel (K.C.) in 1913.1 He held the office of Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn in 1915.1 He wrote the book The Case of Jean Calas, published 1928.1 He was appointed Knight in 1928.1 He held the office of Judge of the High Court, Chancery Division between 1928 and 1934.1 He held the office of Lord Justice of Appeal in 1934.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 26 February 1934.1 He was created Baron Maugham, of Hartfield in the County of Sussex [U.K. Law Lord] on 7 October 1935.1 He held the office of Lord of Appeal in Ordinary on 7 October 1935.1 He wrote the book The Tichborne Case, published 1936.1 He held the office of Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain in 1938.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1938.1 He was created 1st Viscount Maugham, of Hartfield, co.
