     Henry William Berkeley Portman was born on 8 May 1801 at Bryanston, Dorset, England.² He was the son of Edward Berkeley Portman and Lucy Whitby.³ He married Harriet Emily Cavendish Sturt, daughter of Thomas Lennox Napier Sturt, on 8 May 1832 at Compton Pauncefoot, Somerset, England.² He died on 31 March 1879 at age 77 at Red Hill, Lydney, Gloucestershire, England.²
