     Lt.-Gen. Day Hort Macdowall, 22nd of Garthland was born on 3 July 1795.1 He was the son of Day Hort Macdowall and Wilhelmina Graham.2 He married Eleanora Frances Murray Macdowall, daughter of David Macdowall and Eleanor Mary Grant, on 16 April 1838.1 He died on 14 September 1870 at age 75, without issue.1
     He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Renfrewshire.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Renfrewshire.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 3rd Buffs.2

     Mary Macdowall was born on 26 January 1751.1 She was the daughter of William Macdowall, 18th of Garthland and 2nd of Castlesemple and Elizabeth ‘Black Bess’ Graham.2 She married George Houston of Johnstone Castle, son of Ludovick Houston of Johnstone Castle and Jean Rankin of Drumdow, in 1778.1 She died on 2 July 1782 at age 31.1
     From 1778, her married name became Houston.
