Robert Maxwell, 1st and last Earl of Farnham was the son of John Maxwell, 1st Baron Farnham and Judith Barry.1 He married, firstly, Henrietta Cantillon, daughter of Richard Cantillon and Mary Anne O’Mahony, on 11 October 1759.1 He married, secondly, Sarah Cosby, daughter of Pole Cosby and Mary Dodwell, on 1 December 1771.2 He died on 11 November 1779, without issue.2
He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Farnham, of Farnham, co. Cavan [I., 1756] on 6 August 1759.1 He was created 1st Viscount Farnham, co. Cavan [Ireland] on 10 September 1760.1 He was created 1st Earl of Farnham, co. Cavan [Ireland] on 13 May 1763.1 On his death, his viscountancy and earldom became extinct.1
