     He was with the British South African Police in Mashonaland.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1890 in the 3rd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment.1 He was on HQ Staff (Musketry) at Aldershot between 1915 and 1919.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Zoological Society (F.Z.S.)1

     He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 3rd Reserve Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.1 He fought in the First World War.1
