     General Sir John Slade, 1st Bt. was born on 31 December 1762.2 He was the son of John Slade and Charlotte Portal.3 He married, firstly, Anna Eliza Dawson, daughter of James Dawson, on 20 September 1792.2 He married, secondly, Matilda Ellen Dawson, daughter of James Dawson and Olivia Daly, on 17 June 1822.3 He died on 13 August 1859 at age 96 at Monty’s Court, Norton Fitzwarren, Somerset, EnglandG.4,5
     He was commissioned on 11 May 1780 with the rank of Cornet, in the service of the 10th Hussars.2,5 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 28 April 1783.5 He gained the rank of Captain on 24 October 1787.5 He gained the rank of Major on 1 March 1794.5 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 29 April 1795.5 He was General Equerrry to the Duke of Cumberland in 1800.2 He gained the rank of Colonel on 29 April 1802.5 He gained the rank of Brigadier in June 1804.5 He fought in the Battle of Sahagun on 20 December 1808, where he led the 10th Regiment of Foot in the cavalry action.5 He was commander of the Cavalry Brigade between 1809 and 1813.2 He gained the rank of Major-General on 25 October 1809.5 He fought in the Battle of Busaco on 27 September 1810.5 He fought in the Battle of Fuentes d’Onoro between 3 May 1811 and 5 May 1811.2 He fought in the Battle of Corunna in 1812.2 He fought in the Battle of Liera on 11 June 1812.5 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General on 4 June 1814.5 He was Colonel of the 5th Dragoon Guards on 30 September 1831.2 He was created 1st Baronet Slade, of Maunsel House, Somerset [U.K.] on 30 September 1831.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1835.1 He gained the rank of General on 10 January 1837.5
