He succeeded as the 13th Lord Elphinstone [S., 1510] on 2 May 1813.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Horse Guards (Blues.)1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1832 and 1834.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1836.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1836.1 He held the office of Governor of Madras and Bombay in 1847, during the Indian Mutiny.1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1847 and 1859.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1859.1 He was created 1st Baron Elphinstone, of Elphinstone, co. Stirling [U.K.] on 21 May 1859.1 On his death, his U.K. barony became extinct.1
