     He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Captain and Adjutant in the 2nd/8th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, Nottinghamshire and Derbys Regiment.1

     He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Flying Officer in the Royal Air Force, Air Transport Auxiliary.1
