     James Makgill, 1st Viscount of Oxfuird was the son of David Makgill and Mary St. Clair.² He married, firstly, Catherine Cockburn, daughter of Sir John Cockburn of Ormiston and Janet Home, circa 20 December 1621.¹ He married, secondly, Christian Livingston, daughter of Sir William Livingston of Kilsyth and Margaret Ramsay, on 8 July 1646.¹ He died on 5 May 1663.¹
     He held the office of Sheriff of Edinburgh in 1626.¹ He was created 1st Baronet Makgill [Nova Scotia] on 19 July 1627, with special remainder to his heirs male whomsoever.¹ He held the office of Sheriff Principal in 1628.¹ He held the office of a Lord of Session on 3 November 1629.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Edinburgh [Edinburgh] in 1630.¹ He held the office of a Commissioner of Exchequer in 1644.¹ He was created 1st Lord Makgill of Cousland [Scotland] on 19 April 1651, with remainder to his heirs male and of tailzie and provision whomsoever.¹ He was created 1st Viscount of Oxfuird [Scotland] on 19 April 1651, with remainder to his heirs male and of tailzie and provision whomsoever.¹ He held the office of a Lord of Session in February 1660/61.¹

     Patrick Cockburn was the son of Sir John Cockburn of Ormiston and Janet Home.¹ He died before 1623.¹

     Catherine Cockburn is the daughter of Sir John Cockburn of Ormiston and Janet Home.^2,3 She married James Makgill, 1st Viscount of Oxfuird, son of David Makgill and Mary St. Clair, circa 20 December 1621.¹
     From circa 20 December 1621, her married name became Makgill.¹

     James Makgill was the son of James Makgill, 1st Viscount of Oxfuird and Catherine Cockburn.² He died circa January 1662, without issue.¹ He was buried on 24 January 1662.¹

     Andrew Makgill was born on 26 July 1630.¹ He was the son of James Makgill, 1st Viscount of Oxfuird and Catherine Cockburn.² He died circa 1656.¹

     Patrick Makgill was the son of James Makgill, 1st Viscount of Oxfuird and Catherine Cockburn.² He died in 1651, unmarried.¹

     Elizabeth Makgill was born after 1621.² She was the daughter of James Makgill, 1st Viscount of Oxfuird and Catherine Cockburn.³ A contract for the marriage of Elizabeth Makgill and Patrick Hamilton of Little Preston was signed on 31 October 1645.^1,4
