He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1867 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He held the office of Steward of Christ’s College between 1879 and 1885.1 He held the office of Senior Bursar, Balliol College between 1884 and 1888.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Rotherham between 1885 and 1889.1 He held the office of Vice-President of the Committee of the Council of Education between 1892 and 1895.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) by Leeds University, Leeds, Yorkshire, West Riding, EnglandG, in 1904.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) by Bristol University, Bristol, EnglandG, in 1912.1 He succeeded as the 13th Baronet Acland, of Columb-John, Devon [E., 1644] on 18 February 1919.2 He succeeded as the 9th Baronet Acland, of Columb-John, Devon [E., 1678] on 18 February 1919.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3
