He was educated in 1887 at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.3 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1896 in the 1st Battalion, Scots Guards.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1898.3 He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1902 in the Scots Guards.2,3 He was Aide-de-Camp to the Viceroy of India between 1902 and 1903.2 He was appointed Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in 1903.3 He was Aide-de-Camp to HRH The Duke of Connaught between 1904 and 1906.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and Inspector in the Quartermaster-Gen’s Services.4 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Churston of Churston Ferrers and Lupton, co. Devon [U.K., 1858] on 30 November 1910.2 He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Buller [G.B., 1790] on 30 November 1910.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 3rd Reserve Battalion, Scots Guards.4 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.)4
