He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Ipswich.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)2 He held the office of Comptroller of Calais between 1552 and 1558.1 He was held in the Bastille for 19 months after the capture of Calais by the French. He escaped by sawing through the window bars with a file and knotting sheets to reach the ground.2
