He was educated at Cranbrook School, Cranbrook, Kent, England.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve.1 He fought in the First World War.1 He was member of the BOT Advisory Council between 1931 and 1934.1 He was director of Humber Ltd, Hillman Motor Car Company, Sunbeam-Talbot Ltd, Singer Motors, Rootes (Scotland) Ltd, Commer Cars, Karrier Motors, Thrupp and Maberley, British Light Steel Pressings and Tilling Stevens.1 He was member of the BOT Advisory Council between 1939 and 1940.1 He was chairman of Motor Vehicles Maintenance Advisory and Supply Council, Ministry of Supply between 1941 and 1942.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1942.1 He was chairman of Rootes Motors Ltd, and Rootes Ltd.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1955.1 He was created 1st Baron Rootes, of Ramsbury, co. Wilts [U.K.] on 16 February 1959.1
