He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Ruthven of Freeland [S., 1651] on 6 May 1671.1 On 26 October 1674 he entailed his estates, failing his own issue, on his sisters and their issue, with precedence to the youngest.1 He held the office of Lord of the Privy Counsel in 1689.1

On his death, his baronetcy became dormant.1
