     William Oliphant, Lord Newton was born circa 1551.2 He was the son of Thomas Oliphant of Freeland.3 He married Elizabeth Bennet, daughter of John Bennet.3 He died on 1 April 1628.2
     He was admitted to Scots Bar on 20 October 1577.2 He held the office of Justice Depute in 1582.2 He held the office of Advocate depute in 1604.2 He was styled as Lord Newton [Scottish Law Lord] in 1611. He held the office of a Lord of Session between 1611 and 1626.3 He held the office of Lord Advocate between 1612 and 1626.3
