He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.1 He graduated from Wye Agricultural College, Wye, Kent, EnglandG, with a Diploma of Farm Business Administration.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1976.1 He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Buchanan, of Dunburgh [U.K., 1878] on 25 May 1984.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Nottinghamshire between 1985 and 1991.1 He was appointed Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.) in 1991.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire in 1991.1 He lived in 2003 at Hodsock Priory, Blyth, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, EnglandG.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 2011.2
