He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, EnglandG.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1900.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1912 in the 19th Yorkshire Regiment.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1916.2 He was awarded the Order of the White Eagle.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1919.2 He retired from the military in 1920, with the rank of Brigadier-General.2
