Essex [E., 1611] circa September 1644.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Newport, Isle of Wight between November 1645 and December 1648.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Essex from 1654 to 1655.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Hertfordshire from 1654 to 1655.1 He was nominated as one of the members of the High Court of Justice to try King Charles I, but he refused to attend its meetings or sign the warrant for teh king’s execution.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Newport, Isle of Wight between 1660 and 1679.1
