He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)1 He gained the rank of Officer in 1834 in the Royal Navy.1 He held the office of Superintendant of Portsmouth Dockyard between 1865 and 1869.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the North American Station in 1869.1 He was Commanding Officer of the Channel Squadron in 1870.1 He gained the rank of Admiral in 1875.1 He held the office of First Sea Lord of the Admiralty between 1877 and 1879.1

Charles Montagu, 1st and last Earl of Halifax was born on 16 April 1661 at Horton, Northamptonshire, EnglandG.1 He was the son of Hon. George Montagu and Elizabeth Irby.1 He married Anne Yelverton, daughter of Sir Christopher Yelverton, 1st Bt. and Anne Twysden, circa 12 May 1688.3 He died on 19 May 1715 at age 54, from inflammation of the bowels, without issue.1
He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, EnglandG.3 He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.3 He held the office of Clerk of the Privy Council between 1689 and 1692.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Maldon between 1689 and 1695.3 He held the office of a Lord of the Treasury between 1692 and 1694.3 He held the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer between 1694 and 1699.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) from 1694 to March 1701/2.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Westminster between 1695 and 1700.3 He held the office of First Lord of the Treasury between 1697 and 1699.3 He and Catherine Barton were associated between 1700 and 1715.4 He was created 1st Baron Halifax, co. York [England] on 13 December 1700, with a special remainder to his nephew, George.3 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1714.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1714.3 He held the office of First Lord of the Treasury from 1714 to 1715.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey from 1714 to 1715.3 He was created 1st Earl of Halifax [England] on 19 October 1714.1 He was created 1st Viscount Sunbury, co. Middlesex [England] on 19 October 1714.3
