Sir John Fergusson of Kilkerran, 1st Bt.1

     Sir John Fergusson of Kilkerran, 1st Bt. was born in 1656.1 He was the son of Simon Fergusson and Jean Crauford.2 He married Jean Whitefoord, daughter of James Whitefoord of Dunduff and Isabel Blair, in 1684.1 He died on 14 February 1729.1
     He was a practising Advocate in 1681.1 He bought the Barclanachan estate next to Kilkerran.1 He moved the family seat from the old house of Kilkerran, now a ruin, to Barclanachan or Balmaclanachan, formerly a Kennedy property.1 On 7 February 1701 Kilkerran was erected into a free (territorial) Barony by charter.1 He was created 1st Baronet Fergusson, of Kilkerran [Nova Scotia] on 30 November 1703.1 He held the position of Chief of the Name and Arms of Fergusson from in 1719.1

     James Whitefoord of Dunduff was born in 1630 at Dunduff, Maybole, Ayrshire, ScotlandG. He was the son of Adam Whitefoord and Maria Inglis.2 He married Isabel Blair, daughter of Sir Bryce Blair of that Ilk and Marian Dundas.1 He died in 1697.2

     He gained the rank of Ensign in 1745/46 in the Lord Halifax’s Regiment of Foot.1 He gained the rank of Cornet in 1747 in the Cobham’s (later Mordaunt’s) Dragoons.1
