He was educated at Oxford Military College, Hollow Way, Cowley, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches ten times.1 He was Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 11th Battalion, Royal Scots between 1915 and 1917.1 He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1916 with three bars (1917 twice and 1918.)1 He was Temporary Brigadier-General|a Brigade between 1917 and 1919.1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Cameronian Scottish Rifles.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1923 in the Royal Tanks Corps, India.1 He was Temporary Brigadier and Commandant of the Royal Tanks Corps Centre between 1929 and 1931.1 He was Temporary Brigadier and Brigade Commander of the India in 1931.1 He fought in the Mohmand Operations in 1933, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He retired from the military in 1934, with the rank of Honorary Brigadier-General.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1935.1
