He was educated at Merton College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 In 1900 he unsuccessfully stood for Gravesend as the Imperial Liberal candidate in the general election.1 He was editor of the New Liberal Review between 1901 and 1904.1 In 1906 he unsuccessfully stood for Wellington, Shropshire as the Tariff Reform candidate in the general election.1 He was created 1st Baronet Harmsworth, of Freshwater Grove, in the Parish of Shipley, co. Sussex [U.K.] on 21 June 1922.1
