He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Durham University, Durham, County Durham, EnglandG, with a Master of Science (M.Sc.)3 He gained the rank of Flying Officer in 1945 in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1948 in the Northumberland Hussars (Territorial Army.)3 He held the office of County Councillor for County Durham between 1952 and 1961.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Durham between 1956 and 1970.3 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.) in 1960.3 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Durham in 1961.3 He was Joint Master of the Fox Hound, Zetland between 1963 and 1965.3 He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Northumerland Hussars between 1964 and 1966.3 He succeeded as the 11th Baron Barnard of Barnard’s Castle, in the Bishopric of Durham [E., 1698] on 19 October 1964.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham between 1970 and 1988.3 He was Honorary Colonel of the 7th (Durham) Battalion, Light Infantry between 1979 and 1989.3 He lived in 1999 at Staindrop, County Durham, EnglandG.3
