John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton1 
He matriculated at Queen’s College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 14 February 1622/23.2 He held the office of Ambassador to Sweden in January 1636/37, to Christina, Queen of Sweden.2 He was appointed Knight on 27 July 1639 at Berwick, ScotlandG, by the King.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Heytesbury in April 1640, in the Short Parliament.3 In 1642 as Commissary-General, he secured nearly all of Cornwall for teh Royalists.3 He was General of the Royal forces in Devon.3 On 13 April 1645 he was forced to surrender Exeter to the Fairfax, on honourable terms.3 He accompanied the King in his journey to the Isle of Wight.3 He held the office of Controller of the Duke of York’s household in 1652.3 He was created 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton, Cornwall [England] on 19 May 1658, created during King Charles II’s exile in Brussels.3 He held the office of Commissioner of the Navy between 1660 and 1664.3 He held the office of Constable of Athlone Castle on 26 December 1661.3 He held the office of Governor of Galway on 26 December 1661.3 He held the office of Lord-President of Connaught between 1662 and 1666.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 17 June 1663.3 He was chief Commissioner for executing the office of Master General of the Ordnance between 1665 and 1670.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland from 4 February 1669/70 to May 1672.3 His last will was dated 21 January 1672/73. He held the office of Ambassador to France from 1675 to 1676.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
