     Maj.-Gen. Alexander Patrick Drummond Telfer Smollett was born on 12 August 1884.1 He was the son of Colonel Charles Edward Drummond Telfer Smollett. He married Marion Lucy Strutt, daughter of George Herbert Strutt, on 4 December 1913.1 He died on 9 October 1954 at age 70.
     He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England. He fought in the First World War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey in 1939. He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1947. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire in 1948.
