Admiral Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner was born on 12 February 1742.1 He was the son of Lt.-Col. William Gardner and Elizabeth ffarington.1 He married Susannah Hyde Gale, daughter of Francis Gale and Susannah Hall, on 20 May 1769 at Kingston, Jamaica.1 He died on 1 January 1809 at age 66 at Jamaica.1
He was commissioned in 1755 with the rank of officer, in the service of the Royal Navy.3 He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1793.3 He held the office of a Lord of the Admiralty in 1793.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Plymouth in 1793.3 He fought in the The Glorious First of June on 1 June 1794.3 He was created 1st Baronet Gardner, of the Navy [Great Britain] on 9 September 1794.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Westminster in 1796.3 He gained the rank of Admiral of the Blue in 1799.3 He was created 1st Baron Gardner, of Uttoxeter, co. Stafford [Ireland] on 27 December 1800.3 He was created 1st Baron Gardner, of Uttoxeter, co. Stafford [U.K.] on 27 November 1806.3

From before 1769, her married name became Turner.2 From 20 May 1769, her married name became Gardner.1 After her marriage, Susannah Hyde Gale was styled as Baroness Gardner on 27 December 1800.
