     Sir James Steuart was born in 1635.1 He was the son of Sir James Steuart of Coltness and Anne Hope.1,2 He died in 1715.1
     He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates on 20 November 1661.2 He held the office of Lord Advocate of Scotland between 1692 and 1709.2 He purchased Coltness in 1712 from Sir David Steuart, 2nd Bt.1
