     He gained the rank of Colonel in the 40th Foot.¹ He was Aide-de-Camp to HRH The Duke of Kent.¹ He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)¹ He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.)¹ He was created 1st Baronet Smith [U.K.] on 19 July 1838.¹ He held the office of Governor-General of Mauritius.¹ He held the office of Governor-General of Jamaica.¹
