On 20 December 1820 the Barony of Struan was entailed on him by the 15th Chief.1 He held the position of 16th Chief of the Clan Donnachaidh from in 1822.1 On 23 June 1824 he was infeft by Crown Charter in the Barony of Struan.1

He was a planter in 1823 at Jamaica.1 In 1864 he inherited the Chiefship and the estate of Rannoch Barracks, but was unable to return from Jamaica until 1882.1 He held the position of 19th Chief of the Clan Donnachaidh from in 1864.1
