He was given the name of Joseph Pickford at birth.1 On 19 December 1795 his name was legally changed to Joseph Radcliffe by royal licence under terms of his uncle’s will.1 He was created 1st Baronet Radcliffe, of Milnesbridge House, Yorkshire [U.K.] on 2 November 1813, with the unusual waiver of a patent fee, for his energy as a magistrate in suppressing unrest in 1812.1
