Field Marshal John Denton Pinkstone French, 1st Earl of Ypres was born on 28 September 1852 at Ripple, Kent, England.3 He was the son of Commander John Tracy William French and Margaret Eccles.4 He married Eleanora Anna Selby-Lowndes, daughter of Richard William Selby-Lowndes and Mary Susan Fletcher, on 19 August 1880 at Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, England.5,6 He died on 22 May 1925 at age 72 at Deal Castle, Kent, England.7
He was educated in 1866 at H.M.S. Britannia, EnglandG.7 He gained the rank of Midshipman in the Royal Navy.7 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1874 in the 19th Hussars.7 He gained the rank of Captain in 1880.7 He fought in the Sudan Expedition between 1884 and 1885, where he was mentioned in dispatches.7 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1889.7 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1899.7 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, where he was mentioned in dispatches four times.7 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 29 November 1900.7 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1902.7 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) on 9 November 1902.7 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) on 30 June 1905.7 He gained the rank of General in 1907.7 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) on 25 June 1909.7 He gained the rank of Field Marshal in 1913.7 He was Commader-in-Chief of the British Expedtionary Force from 5 August 1914 to 18 December 1915.7 He was awarded the Order of Merit (O.M.) on 3 December 1914.7 He was Field Marshal Commanding-in-Charge of the Home Forces between 1915 and 1918.7 He was created 1st Viscount French, of Ypres and of High Lake, co. Michael John Brougham, 5th Baron Brougham and Vaux was born on 2 August 1938.1 He was the son of Victor Henry Peter Brougham, 4th Baron Brougham and Vaux and Jean Follett.1 He married, firstly, Olivia Susan Gray, daughter of Rear-Admiral Gordon Thomas Seccombe Gray and Sonia Moore-Gwyn, on 20 July 1963.1 He and Olivia Susan Gray were divorced in 1967.1 He married, secondly, Catherine Jill Gulliver, daughter of William Gulliver, on 17 January 1969.1 He and Catherine Jill Gulliver were divorced on 9 December 1981.3 He married, thirdly, Sezgin (?) on 14 September 2022.4 He died on 27 August 2023 at age 85.5
