He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel between 1910 and 1946 in the South Lancashire Regiment, Gordon Highlanders and Seaforth Highlanders.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded and was mentioned in despatches twice.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1918.1 He gained the rank of Acting Lieutenant-Colonel in the 1st Gordon Highlanders.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he became a POW and escaped from the Japanese at Singapore.1
